Claire was taught
to knit by her grandmother when she was 6 years old, by the time she was 13 she was hand knitting
jumpers using commercial knitting patterns. Claire has been hand spinning different fibres for over 20 years,
and has had numerous solo exhibitions across the South West of England of her hand spun and hand knitted garments,
which she designs herself using different eco friendly fibres such as wool, silk,alpaca, mohair, soya protein
fibre and bamboo. The natural dyes she uses come from onion skins, lettuce and ivy
berries to name just a few that she brews up herself.
Claire is a member of the Somerset
Guild of Craftsmen and also a member of the Westward Ho and Bideford Art Society, her
work can be seen on the AXIS Database for Contemporary British
Visual Artists - www.axisartists.org.uk under the name of Claire Winter
Claire often
writes articles in the Smallholder and the Homefarmer magazines on different subjects including hand spinning and hand
knitting.
